Spain, Technical Assistance for the Supervision and Inspection of the Construction Works for the New Subterranean Connection between Two Stations in Madrid Subway

Donor: Ministry of Public Works

Budget: 1,500,000 (Works value: 30 mill)

Project Description:

The project consisted of the creation of a new underground connection between two of the most important Madrid Subway Stations: The northern, Nuevos Ministerios, and the southern Atocha.

Atocha, one of the three biggest train stations in Spain covers all the traffic departures towards the southern region of the country, high speed railway to Seville, and it is a hub for many commuting lines to the southern suburbs of the city. Nuevos Ministerios station, located in the center of the city, links metro, train and bus stations.It also has a direct connection with the airport. These two hot spots are linked through an underground train line, but the connection through metro is conditioned to several transfers. Thus, the need for a direct line connection of two stations through the metro was essential to make a faster traffic across the city.

The project included the supervision of the construction project. The activities carried out were the following:

  • Inspection and supervision for the construction works;
  • Material inspection;
  • Laboratory testing;
  • Detailed Design and Construction Project Elaboration of new and rehabilitation sections;
  • Technical Assistance to the Works Direction Unit;
  • Quality Control and Materials Assessment (including laboratory analysis);
  • Quantitative control of works;
  • Surveillance in the fulfillment of safety and health restrictions.
